course dream london weaver - Updating pages from the template

Hi Rich,
I have been doing fine with the site, the dropdown menu's all work great, but I went in to change some details on my template page and it for some reason has stopped updating all the linked pages when I click on 'save' at the end of my changes. It used to bring up a box that scrolled through the related pages and updated each one so that the changes were consistent throughout, but it has stopped doing this for some reason. Any ideas? And is there a way I can update pages manually?
Thanks,
Jo.

RE: Updating pages from the template

Try doing it this manual way first.

Assuming you run Dreamweaver 8? If not, it's similar in MX.

Go to Modify -> Templates -> Update pages (dialogue box appears)
Change 'look in' selectbox from 'Entire Site' to 'Files That Use. ', then select the template you've just made changes to.

Hit 'start' button and it should then go throughout your pages.

Not sure why it wouldn't be doing the update. Make sure you press Control+S (or File -> Save) rather than F12 (preview but prompts you to save), as this sometimes doesn't update the files that use the template.

Perhaps there is some option you've accidentally turned off, like 'No, and don't ask me again' (to update all pages), although I don't remember that being an option.

Does this cover what you meant by 'is there a way I can update pages manually', the template updates? If you meant 'can you go and change the template mark-up on one particular page', then no. Non-editable regions are locked out. But you can detach a file from the template, making it stand alone. Of course, you then lose the auto-updates. Perhaps try putting in an editable region, just for that one specific page.

RE: Updating pages from the template

Hi,
Although this did answer my question the problem turned out to be that I moved the files into the root directory when I was making the site live, and although I had moved them so that they were all together and I don't think that I changed links etc, for some reason the links between pages and templates got broken so I fixed it by reassigning the templates to each page. Took a bit of time but it is now fixed, so thank you anyway!
